The Workus is a story-collecting, story-telling mobile installation that travels around Alberta collecting and sharing stories about occupational illnesses and chronic workplace ailments.
The Workus allows you to:
Listen to stories told by workers who have suffered chronic workplace illness and ailments.
Listen to the sounds of workplaces.
Learn about hazards and potential illnesses and chronic ailments associated with your job.
Learn about common workplace illnesses and chronic ailments.
Share your own story
by recording it and picking sounds to accompany your voice from a
database of recorded real workplace sounds and sound impressions.
Bring The Workus to Your Community
The Workus is mobile and can travel to your community or to your event. We
go where working people have stories to tell or where people want to
listen to those stories, to learn from them, and to be informed and
inspired by them.
The
Workus has already been to dozens of community events, including
community picnics, conventions, festivals, pow-wows, rodeos and
meetings.
For worksites or short-duration activities, you can also bring The Workus SideShow, a smaller version which can be set up in just minutes, to your community.
The
Workus is also available for school visits, and we have developed a
teachers' guide that allows The Workus to be the focus of a single
class or the entire school.
If you are interested in bringing The Workus or The Workus Sideshow to your community, event or school, please contact us.
Why The Workus?
The Workus exposes the hidden epidemic of workplace-related illnesses and ailments that workers and their families experience.
The Workus gives voice to those workers who suffer from debilitating and often painful occupational illnesses and chronic ailments.
The Workus stories inform and inspire.
The Workus engages the community in processes of education and change, which we believe means:
-
making occupational illness into a public issue
-
taking action on occupational illness and chronic aliments
-
eliminating or reducing the workplace hazards that lead to illness
-
fair compensation for damaged workers and their families
-
healthier workplaces and healthier communities
The Workus presents Music!
Listen
This music contains a small sampling of the many stories that we have collected to date. You will hear from workers who suffer physically and emotionally from workplace injuries and occupational illnesses. You will also hear from a daughter whose father died from asbestosis, and from a mother whose young son was killed on the job in an incident that was 100 percent preventable.
More Workers share their stories
Share
After you listen to these stories, we encourage you to share them with others as many occupational illnesses and chronic workplace aliments remain hidden from public view. By asking workers and their families to share their stories and by asking you in turn to share them with others, their experiences become an important part of our collective conversation about how to make our workplace safer and healthier.
